Postoperative care of vascular surgery patients

Academic Article

  • Vascular surgical patients collectively share one of the highest rates of postoperative morbidity and mortality. The presence of atherosclerosis and the often advanced age of this patient population combine to cause frequent cardiac, renal, and neurologic impairment in the days following surgery. For those subjects who develop a major postoperative complication, there is a high risk of sepsis syndrome and multiple organ system failure. It remains to be seen whether changes in anesthetic management and surgical approach will alter postoperative outcome.
