Overview

  • James Ernest received his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, his M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans, and his BA(Ed.) Hons. Exon. from the University of Exeter (UK). After finishing his Ph.D. at UAB, James worked at universities in New York (SUNY Buffalo) and Georgia (Valdosta State) before coming home to UAB. His professional interests revolve around early childhood education and early intervention. James teaches courses for master and doctoral degree students in the Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education Programs and has taught a variety of coursework from bachelor's to the doctoral level in early childhood education, elementary education, and special education. He is the current advisor for the Ph.D. program at UAB. James' research explores the effectiveness of varied recommended practice in early childhood education. More recently, he has worked at the preservice level (future teachers) and the inservice level (professionals already working in the field) to (1) Develop The Alabama Reflective Coach as a professional development model in Pre-K programs at the local and state level, expanding the professional development model from just over 200 teachers and classrooms in 2012 to over 1,000 classrooms in 2018 and (2) Develop databases and then evaluate the efficacy of First Class, the Alabama state-funded high quality Pre-K program, providing findings from studies of teacher and child outcomes to support the expansion of the program.

    Research Overview

  • I have had the opportunity to work with the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education on a variety of projects. These have led to an increased visibility and access to the state's high quality Pre-K Program that has been named First Class. I have helped develop the professional development system for the program (The Alabama Reflective Coach - ARC), provided support for developing the capacity of coaches and teachers to meet the needs of bilingual language learners, and help strategize for state-wide systems change. Also, as part of a data-collection and analysis team, we have produced numerous reports, information for presentations to state budget committees, press releases, etc., that support the First Class program. Through these efforts, First Class has increased its funding from $19 million (2012) to almost $100 million, serving roughly 3000 children in 2012 and 19,000 children in 2018.

    Teaching Overview

  • In my 25+ years of teaching at the university level, I've taught 16 different courses in early childhood, elementary education, and special education; having developed 10 of these to be taught fully online. I've taught at the undergrad and master's level, and have taught eight courses at the doctoral level. In 2015, some of my fellow faculty and students nominated me for, and I was honored to win the President's Award for Teaching for the School of Education. I have also won the Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship. I advise and help direct the PhD program in Early Childhood Education at UAB and work closely with our doctoral students. Some of the Courses I Currently Teach: EEC 660 - Readings in Teaching and Learning ECE 731 - Children and Society ECE 738 - Consultation / Coaching for Working with Young Children ECE 748 - Research in Infancy ECE 792 - Research and Methodology in Early Childhood Education ECE 798 - Non Dissertation Research ECE 799 - Dissertation Research Our Early Childhood Education program has been listed as a top program in the country by a variety of organizations / independent reviewers. For example, The Best Schools (.org) has ranked our program #3 in the nation for the past couple of years. The US News and World publication ranked the graduate education programs at the UAB School of Education #29 in the nation for the 2016-2017 year.
