Overview

  • Scholarship My current research is directed towards developing nutritional and behavioral strategies that can reduce the prevalence of metabolic and cardiovascular complications that are associated with type 2 diabetes. I am specifically interested in the mechanistic role through which mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox signaling influence the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and associated comorbidities. Service I am an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society, and The Obesity Society. I serve as an ad hoc reviewer for a number of peer reviewer journals, including but not limited to, Obesity, Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences, Journal of Obesity, Cell Biochemistry and Function, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Additionally, I am a member of the editorial board's for PLOS One, Journal of Sport and Human Performance, and Obesity: Open Access. I am also an Associate Scientist in UAB's Nutrition Obesity Research Center, Center for Exercise Medicine, Diabetes Research Center, Comprehensive Center for Aging, and the Nathan Shock Center.

    Teaching Overview

  • My overall teaching philosophy is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and leadership to enable success in their respected fields. As an educator in exercise physiology, it is important to keep up with current research as the field continues to evolve. Keeping up with the latest research allows me to provide my students with the most recent theories and ideas that are becoming known in exercise physiology. I want students to understand the basic science needed in order to be competent in the field, and be able to utilize this knowledge as a professional in the health and fitness industry.
