Overview

  • Victor Darley-Usmar received his Ph.D. at the University of Essex in England and then moved to the University of Oregon as a Post-Doctoral Fellow to pursue his interests in the structure and function of mitochondrial proteins in human disease. After a period as a lecturer in Japan and ten years as a Research Scientist in Burroughs Wellcome in London he joined UAB to establish his own research group in the Department of Pathology in 1995. He has received multiple awards for training and mentoring and served as the Associate Dean for Post-Doctoral Education and the Pathology Graduate Program Director. He established the UAB Center for Free Radical Biology from 2006-2015 as an international center for research in redox biology. In his current role of Associate Dean for Research he brings his experience in the commercial sector and career development programs to the strategic management of the School of Medicine Research. In his own research program he has been instrumental in defining how redox biology modifies mitochondrial function in pathology and in recognition of these achievements was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine in 2012. He has been continuously funded by NIH for 22 years and has published over 300 articles with an H factor of 98 and over 35,000 citations. At UAB his contribution to research in mitochondrial pathology was recognized by his appointment as the Foundation Faculty for the “Endowed Professorship in Mitochondrial Medicine and Pathology”. He is now developing a program to apply measures of bioenergetic health to personalized medicine. He was a recent recipient of the prestigious “Creativity is a Decision” and “Blue Sky” awards from UAB for the Bioenergetic Health Index concept. He was recently recognized as the 2017 UAB Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, which is is the highest honor bestowed by the Academic Medical Center on a faculty member who has advanced the frontiers of science and made outstanding contributions to education, research and public service.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. Darley-Usmar's major research interests are in translating basic research in redox biology and bioenergetics to a clinical setting. His research is focused on the contribution of mitochondrial dysfunction to the pathophysiology of human disease. He recently developed the methods for the assessment of bioenergetic function in cells isolated from human blood which opens up the potential for using mitochondrial function in translational medicine (1). Deteriorating mitochondrial quality control is an important mechanism for understanding how bioenergetics changes in response to metabolic stress and the interface with autophagy was explore in the context of diabetes and heme toxicity (2,3). Recently he has shown how novel mitochondrial therapeutics can protect against metabolic stress (4,5).

  • Teaching Overview

  • Since joining UAB in 1995, Dr. Darley-Usmar has actively engaged in graduate training and post-doctoral training. During his time at UAB he has mentored 16 graduate students, has served on over 25 student thesis committees and over this period mentored the transition to independence of 9 Post Docs to faculty (3, are Assistant Professors, 2 are now Associate Professors and 2 Full Professors). He has played an active role in developing educational programs at UAB at both the administrative and faculty level. He served as graduate program director for the Pathology Graduate Program (50-60 students) from 2003-2005 and as Associate Dean for Post-Doctoral Education from 2003-2007 (290-320 Post Doctoral Trainees). In 2009 he received the Deans award for Mentorship and most valued faculty member award from the Pathology graduate students on four occasions. He has served as a charter member of the Atherosclerosis and Inflammation study section in addition to reviewing program projects, training grants and the K99 training program. As a member of the Center for Free Radical Biology and member of the Clinical Nutrition Center Center, Comprehensive Diabetes and Cardiovascular Centers and Nephrology Research Training Center, Co-Director of a Core in the O’Brien AKI injury center, Dr. Darley-Usmar has contributed to the career development of the trainees in the program by offering mentoring guidance and expertise in metabolism and bioenergetics.
